Below Morsø give some good advice to the householder on how always to keep the door glass of the wood burning stove clean.
The pleasure of having a wood burning stove is very much conditioned by a clean door glass in order to be able to see the nice and comfortable flame picture. But soot on the door glass is a well-known problem.

However, the problem can be solved and the largest and oldest producer of wood burning stoves, Morsø, can give you some good advice on how the door glass always is kept clean and free from soot.

The most essential thing is, according to Morsø, to prevent that no soot is created on the door glass during combustion. This can be prevented by using dry wood. The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 18-20 per cent. If small cracks appear in both ends of the logs, and if the logs sound dry when knocking against each other, the moisture content is right. To obtain a moisture content of less than 20 per cent the wood must normally dry for minimum 1 year – preferably 2 years – kept dry under a pent roof with ventilation from the wind. It is a good idea to keep the wood in the house 24 hours before use.

Moreover, it is crucial that small pieces of wood are used. Split the wood a few times – thickness 8-10 cm. At the same time it is important that plenty of air is supplied to the combustion. Many householders do often not supply enough air in order to extend the burning time. The result will be sooty glass.

However, if soot appears on the door glass, it is possible to remove it. A little trick says to dip a moist newspaper in the ashes in the stove and remove the soot with this. However, this is only to be done this way in case of heavy soot built-ups to remove the outer soot layer as there is a risk of scratching the glass. Another thing which can be done is to use our environmentally friendly, Morsø cleanser that simply is sprayed on the door glass when the stove is cold and wiped off after 2 minutes with a dry cloth. The glass is now clean as new again.
